Hurston/Wright Creative Writing Intensive for 8th through 12th Grade Students
Five tuition-free, three weeklong, workshops that will enable 8th through 12th grade students to become effective communicators. These workshops will provide opportunities for students to develop their writing and reading skills in a nurturing group setting that celebrates Black literature. These non-residential workshops will run for three weeks during the summer and be followed by continued instruction throughout the academic year.

Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers
This award honors excellence in fiction writing by students of African descent enrolled full time as undergraduate or graduate students in any college or university in the United States. It is given for the best previously unpublished short story or novel excerpt and is presented during an annual program where published writers welcome the honorees into the national literary community.

Hurston/Wright Writers’ Week
The nation’s first multi-genre summer writers’ workshop for writers of African descent.  This is a weeklong program of classes and presentations by publishers, agents and writers. Writers’ Week brings together an international community of Black writers who work in a nurturing/safe space to discuss their work, its meaning, and unique aesthetic. The workshop attracts – published and unpublished writers, college students, high school students (tuition free), seniors, retirees, and professionals.

Hurston/Wright Writers’ Week for High School Students
Tuition-free summer workshop with classes that introduce the basic elements of creative writing to high school students.  This workshop ignites high school students natural ability for writing and enhances every facet of their communication skills.

Hurston/Wright LEGACY Award
The first national award presented to published writers of African descent by the national community of Black writers. This award, underwritten by Borders Books & Music, consists of prizes for the highest quality writing in the categories of Fiction, Debut Fiction, Nonfiction, and Contemporary Fiction.
