To discover, develop, and honor Black writers in order to preserve the legacy, and ensure the future of Black writers and the literature they produce.
OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Awarded more than $64,000 in cash prizes to 35 winners of the Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers.
- Since 1996, hosted more than 800 writers at the annual Hurston/Wright Writers' Week Workshop.
- Granted more than $85,000 in financial aid and scholarships to writers to attend the Hurston/Wright Writers' Week Workshops.
- Granted more than $45,000 in scholarships to writers to attend our tuition-free Hurston/Wright Writers' Week for High School Students.
- Since 2002, awarded $240,000 in cash prizes to 35 recipients of the annual Hurston/Wright Legacy Award.
- Inspired the creation of writers' workshops and support groups formed by workshop participants in their home communities.
- Been recognized as a major institutional predictor of future success for emerging Black writers.
- Built an institution that ensures African American literature will continue to maintain its rightful place in the American literary canon.
- Serves as a vehicle for the continued development of the story of people of African descent.
- By example, encouraged MFA programs and traditional writer's workshops to become racially diverse and inclusive.
Accomplishments of Alumni & Award Winners
Eight winners of the Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers and six alumni of the Hurston/Wright Writers' Week have had books published by major publishers such as Warner Books, Houghton Mifflin, and Random House.
